We plan on using these to give to the students so they can write a message to an older student to encourage them to choose to stay drug free. Luckily, there are plenty of easy ways to include drug awareness activities in your lesson plans – without spending a ton of time planning. Today many schools use Red Ribbon Week as a chance to discuss drugs and alcohol with students. In the early grade, many teachers focus on safety with prescription medication.
NFP organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign in response to the murder of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. The theme contest is just one way NFP brings awareness to the community. Use those themed days as an opportunity to discuss the dangers of underage drinking and drug use with your peers.

Because of this state of their social existence, peer pressure can be particularly effective at blurring lines and making the clearest logic rather fuzzy. Natural high is clear, but logic is rarely the key to keeping kids off the path towards drug and alcohol use. Have a discussion with young students that sometimes pills and medicine can look like candy.
Raise money for Red Ribbon Week activities by offering sponsored bows. Or, offer smaller bows to students to hang around the school for a few dollars each. Spread your drug-free message in the community with painted rocks!
Hold mini-celebrations to coordinate with your theme days.
Just say yes to doing something that fills you with joy and satisfaction – and helps provide students with the tools to create positive and intentional decision-making habits. True dangers of drug and alcohol abuse from these relevant influencers. As educators, we can strategize and even role-play with them to help them decide in advance what they will do in specific situations.
Natural High has an activity to help kids consider how they will respond to an offer of substances called React In The Moment. This activity is also in Day 5 of our Red Ribbon Week lesson plan. The game is all about making good choices and how to "Just say no". Many local police departments have a D.A.R.E. officer who would be happy to come speak with your class or campus about saying no to drugs. These individuals can get booked out early, so reach out to ensure you get your guest speaker on the calendar.

If you're unsure where to start looking, consider calling your local paper or D.A.R.E officer to see if they have any information. Many times these individuals can lead you in the right direction. Just in case there is someone out there who isn’t thrilled about dressing up, we have included daily challenge activities instead. We have also created bell-ringer worksheets that go with the daily challenge. This type of intentionality is what makes Red Ribbon Week memorable.
